The Department of Homeland Security has addressed some states' concerns about Real ID in a new proposal, but four challenges remain.
Those challenges will be part of the discussion during the CSG Technology Working Group session from 8-10 a.m. Monday, June 11, during the CSG Spring National Committee and Task Force Meetings. The technology session will be held in the Grand Caribbean Salon-8, Lobby Level, at the El Conquistador in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. The task force will discuss the regulation and focus on what states are doing or should be doing to meet the deadline for Real ID.
Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap and Thomas Jarrett, chief information officer/secretary of the Delaware Department of Technology and Information, will lead the discussion.
Dunlap began his career in public in 1996 when he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives. He became Maine’s 47th secretary of state in 2005. As Maine’s chief motor vehicle official, he has continued work to modernize and integrate electronic delivery of many services, including Rapid Renewal and online driver’s license renewals. With passage of the Real ID Act, Dunlap has been active in the national discussion of identity security.
Jarrett has served in his technology post since February 2002. His first charge as secretary was managing the transition of the agency from the Office of Information Services to the new Department of Technology and Information. The department now more closely resembles a private sector IT organization than a typical state agency. In addition to serving as the governor’s chief adviser on technology, Jarrett serves Delaware as chairman of the state’s Technology Investment Council, E911 Advisory Board and the Criminal Justice Council.
Check back next week for a report on this and other sessions during the spring meeting.
